Reflective learning by doing- role playing and checking in on our own biases

The CoPPer probation volunteer training programme consists of different modules. The introductory module focuses on the basics of probation work and the criminal justice system as well as explanations as to how people find themselves under probation supervision.

The in-person modules focus on relational skills, communication skills, how to observe and interpret situations and how to solve problems. Throughout these different in-person modules, great emphasis is placed on small group work, role playing, case study discussion and exercises to reflect on participants’ own unconscious biases which they may hold. By including these learning elements in the CoPPer training manual, the community building aspect of probation volunteering is actively supported as well as best practices in volunteer training adhered to.

The variety of interactive and creative exercises also allow volunteers to strengthen their empathy, boundary setting and relational skills.
